I am a Professional Sailor and have been in the game for over 15 years now. A graduate of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Youth Training Programme, I left my home country of New Zealand in 2008, 'cutting my teeth' on the World Match Racing Circuit and being crowned 2009 World Match Racing Champion's as part of our Black Match Racing Team.
I raced in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race as part of Team Sanya, where I was awarded the Hans Horrevoets 'under 30 Volvo Ocean Race Rookie of the Race award', while in the 2014-2015 edition I was a Trimmer/Helm aboard Team Alvimedica.
Grand Prix Race teams I have been part of over the years include Mini Maxi 72's (Shockwave, Proteus, Sorcha, Caol Ila), TP52's (Gladiator, Vesper, Beau Geste) and the PAC52 (Invisible Hand), while trimming for China Team and Red Bull Racing in the AC 45 World series, then continuing on to the Mod 70 Phaedo/Beau Geste has been my multihull apprenticeship.
As far as offshore races go aside from the Volvo Race, I have raced in most of the iconic classic offshores around the world, including overall wins in the Middle Sea, Caribbean 600, Newport Bermuda and Hong Kong to Vietnam Races. Current Offshore Sailing Records include the Round Isle of Wight and the Transpacific Records (aboard Phaedo).
Throughout my sailing career, I have been lucky enough to have been involved in some very well run teams and I have learned the key ingredients to running a successful program. I am very much a people person and I like to sail with not only great sailors but also people who are fun to be around. I also believe that the right systems need to be in place to get the most out of a crew and it is something that I can usually identify pretty quickly within a team.
If you would like help putting a team together and getting the right systems in place to get the most out of your boat, then please do get in touch. A recent example of this was the team that I put together on the Fast 40 '42 South' for Cowes Week 2019, where we won 4 out of 6 races and comfortably took out IRC Zero over two other Fast 40's and a Professional TP52 Team.
Starting my professional life a sailmaker at North Sails in Auckland, through to becoming a salesman in my early 20's, saw me involved in sailing with many clients on various boats from a very young age. I have continued to do this for North Sails in the UK and am out sailing on the Solent most weekends when I'm in town. Over the past decade, I have certainly developed a skill in getting the most out of a crew/boat, with a massive emphasis on communication and keeping the intensity up, while also having fun.
I have coached Fast 40's, TP52's, P40's and almost anything in between. I really do get a kick out of helping teams out and a recent example of this would be the J122e Juno that saw us get 2nd at Cowes week 2018 (with me as tactician) and then a little bit of Swete coaching saw them take out the overall P40 Season Championship with a Corinthian crew!
